April has been incredibly busy on the Whiffle Pig allotment! We have been determined to grow as much produce as possible for our community food boxes to help as many people in need as we can. Below shows our sowing list so far and if we can get even half of what we have planted successfully out into the community it will make a big difference to families and individuals who are struggling during the Covid-19 crisis. We have had interest in our food boxes not only from our socially isolated workshop participants, but also from The British Heart Foundation and Umbrella charity who empower disabled children, young adults and their families. This has also been coupled with an interest in our online resources and our ability to teach people how to grow their own food at home and also try new creative projects as we mentioned last month. Some of our recycling ideas have been well-received including our bike wheel runner bean trellis shown below! It is really encouraging to know that our hard work on the allotment will have such a positive impact on the community, and although we had a compost theft at the beginning of the month, many Whiffle Pig followers stepped up and raised £350 for us to keep things moving! To accompany this, our Sunflower Competition was launched last month and we have been receiving some fantastic photographs. There has been some great feedback and participants are having a lot of fun showing their progress to friends and family which is helping people stay connected. We’re looking forward to seeing who wins as it’s also firing up some friendly competition!
