Today Syrians came with their Welsh friends from Aberystwyth, Cardigan and Fishguard to enjoy Cilgerran wildlife park, a bender shelter building workshop for children and each others company. Some had been on our shores only two months, some a few years.

It was a family like event with lots of conversations across the language divide, giving rise to laughter and expressions to supplement words. The food was resplendent, Syria’s best covering the table. Children ran loose and free, mums went off for coffee with dads wondering where they had gone.

The little girl from our family was bursting to say something at the end of the workshop, her arm waving desperately.

The teacher wondered if she wanted the loo. But no she wanted to give her thanks with feeling.

The teacher was taken by surprise. She was moved.
