June is the season of growth and the Whiffle Pig allotment has been no exception! We were delighted to partner with Gardening For Wellbeing to help fill out our veg boxes for the community and we have continued to ensure that fresh food parcels are delivered to our housebound Whiffle Pig participants thanks to the funding from Vegware. These individuals are currently unable to work with us on the allotment due to Covid-19 and we always want them to know that we are thinking about them and are encouraging them to eat well at the same time.
Our biggest fresh food box was delivered to The Hope Centre in Derby who have been working for years to support people in crisis situations and are needed now more than ever. They support refugees, asylum seekers, victims of domestic violence and individuals and families in poverty amongst many others in the Derby area. They were very keen for us to provide fresh produce for their community food parcels as perishables are not something they can easily manage unless delivered the same morning as distribution. We aim to ensure that these donations will be a regular provision with the inclusion of some of our recipes from the dietetic students at the University of Nottingham, encouraging better nutritional guidance and support for the most vulnerable in our community.
