Whiffle Pig have been working hard over the growing season to distribute food boxes out into the community for our housebound and care home participants, as well as to our local food bank at the Hope Centre in Derby who supports many individuals in crisis including families suffering the impact of Covid-19, asylum seekers, victims of domestic abuse and supporting those in poverty. Feedback from the centre has been incredibly positive and we were so pleased to learn that our fresh food has been helping between 3 and 5 families with each box! Our recipes have been requested particularly for the families with young children as some of them have never purchased produce like fresh beetroots or courgettes before. Many are also apprehensive about using ‘wonky veg’ so it was wonderful to know that families are learning through our donations and are keen to understand how to cook new foods to bulk out healthy meals. Besides continuing to keep our allotment producing as much food as possible, we will be continuing to develop easy, simple recipes and cooking techniques to add to our donations in line with the feedback that we have received, as well as working towards supporting the community in crisis to grow their own food.
