Celebrations were plentiful this month, especially on the 20th May, World Bee Day. The purpose of this international day is to acknowledge the role of bees and other pollinators for the ecosystem. The UN Member States approved Slovenia’s proposal to proclaim 20 May as World Bee Day in December 2017.

May sees the honeybees and beekeepers ramp up their activities, and this year we’ve enjoyed a good start to the season. In between the showers, the bees have been out and about collecitng nectar and pollen and producing honey stores, so long may that continue!

A great way to support your local honeybees and other insects is to grow pollinator friendly plants and we have created a leaflet which highlights what you can do to help them throughout the year (as shown here). This gives details on the types of plants, trees and shrubs that the bees and insects love and when they will bloom, so your garden and local areas will be buzzing most of the year!
