BHSG Volunteer Activities
Our volunteers in the shop have introduced ‘Tasty Bite Thursday’ to share with our customers and passers-by to come in and try some new recipes, enjoy a bit of a chat around food and shop produce. We are working in partnership with Tesco through Fare share and where appropriate we will use some of their produce which may be near its ‘use by’ or ‘best before date’ for the taster, we will then provide ‘meal bag’ for customers to take home, this may also be from Fare share produce so will be free of charge. So far we’ve tried two types of smoothies and ‘bubble and squeak’ Delicious!
We are also pleased to welcome a number of new volunteers in February.
Other Community Activities and services
Pancake Day
The nursery school mums had a fun session at Broomhouse Primary school making savoury and sweet pancakes. Some had never made pancakes before and they went down a treat, people were delighted they were so simple to prepare and make.
Buggy Gym had a special event in January at Gate 55. Ten mums and their babies took part in a Buggy Gym session out of doors and finishing with stretches indoors in the gym. We had a social light lunch, we offered an optional crèche too, so the women had some time after that to listen to an interesting talk about nutrition from Alijca the Buggy Gym coach. We also had information about the shop and other local services and had light lunch of soup and fruit from our shop produce along with some samples to take away. We also chatted about local health needs and expectations.
February Holiday activities.
We ran a morning and afternoon session of ‘Cooking with kids’ sessions for Adults and carers with their children. Lots of friendly fun with tasty recipes.
Our walking group had an enjoyable guided walk from Ben at the Water of Leith Trust and chair exercises are ongoing and busy, we are nearing the end of our terms of Adult Cooking, Aerobics, Cooking Up a Story and preparing for the ‘Broomhouse Health Chat’ community event in March.
