We hosted our regular Garvald Fire and Craft Friday; this group has made the firepit at Three Hares their second home and we love to host them!

Japanese Knotweed treatment took place this month, as terms of our lease with Crown Estate Scotland, as part of invasive species removal. The stands that were treated last year did not regrow but we have had 2 new stands brought from upstream along the Esk. We are trying to work with
other groups to co-ordinate a removal of Japanese Knotweed from all along the Esk, starting furthest upstream so as to not be continually fighting a losing battle!

The Penicuik to Dalkeith walkway which borders Three Hares, and from which we gain access to the land, is being resurfaced between Auchendinny and Rosewell. As a result the path was closed and our access blocked for just over a week this month. The works continue in October, but hopefully access to Three Hares will only be blocked for a further few days. Even so, we still managed to run our regular Volunteer Sunday, on the last Sunday of the month.

This session was with a twist, as alongside some conservation tasks on the land, Alice from Small Woods Association in Wales ran a course with a practical element on Woodland Management for Small Woodlands. Alice used to work with Three Hares before her relocation to Wales, so it was a joy to welcome her back and have her share her knowledge and expertise.
