A huge thank you to the team for continuing to support us by means of our monthly grant. This
means that we can provide a safe space for women recovering from trauma as we run our surf
therapy programs and community groups.
Groundswell Scotland Surf Therapy Report – 2024
Introduction
As part of our commitment to continuous improvement, an independent researcher, Dr Rosie
Arthur, Queen Margaret University conducted a consultation with participants using 2024
transcripts. The feedback gathered has been shared with our team, and we have taken action to
incorporate these insights into our future programmes.
The Impact of Surf Therapy
Participants shared how surf therapy has affected them:
• “My recent sessions with Groundswell Surf Therapy have helped me through
difficult times. They have connected me with my surf sisters and the sea, reminding me how
strong and resilient I truly am.” – P1
• “For the first time in months, I allowed myself to have fun, play, and laugh. I
caught a glimpse of the old me. I was able to express my true emotions without a mask. I even
gained confidence in the water, overcoming my fear of putting my head under.” – P2
• “It’s been wonderful to try something new in such a beautiful place. I still feel the
same as I did before, but I have experienced a sense of belonging and being understood in a
safe environment. Learning a new activity has been exciting and reminded me how much I love
being in the water. It also reassured me that I’m not alone in my feelings.” – P3
Groundswell Scotland’s Achievements
Groundswell Scotland has made a significant impact through our surf therapy programmes:
• Delivered 10 surf therapy programmes, supporting 64 participants and 30
facilitators and volunteers.
• Hosted 7 surf festivals and 150 community sessions and events, engaging over
1,250 participants and 25 facilitators and volunteers.
• Led initiatives in equality, diversity, and inclusion, with participant feedback
researched by Queen Margaret University.
• Created platforms for change and action on climate and social justice.
Participant Reflections on the Programme
Participants highlighted what made their experience special:
• “The feeling of being part of a circle of wonderful women, sharing life
experiences—our ups and downs—and how the sea can help us through them.” – P1
• “The facilitators were the key to the programme’s success. They were supportive,
encouraging, caring, and fun. The grounding exercises and activities each week were the right
length, with no pressure to do anything we weren’t comfortable with.” – P2
• “Lovely, competent facilitators in a beautiful setting, with a cosy place to change.”
– P3
• “The programme brings together supportive techniques each week in a very
positive way.” – P4
• “The combination of physical activity, learning a new skill, being in nature, and
being with others who believe in you was powerful. The programme was well-run and inclusive
for everyone.” – P5
• “Experiencing the joy of learning a new activity and feeling a sense of belonging
in a safe environment was amazing. It reminded me of my love for the water and reassured me
that I am not alone in my feelings.” – P6
Conclusion
The feedback from our participants highlights the profound impact of surf therapy and the sense
of community it fosters. We are proud of the progress we have made and will continue to listen,
learn, and evolve to provide the best possible experience for everyone involved.
