Ongoing support from Vegware helps GCP to provide food support to people facing destitution. We provide food support in two ways, via supermarket food vouchers and via our pay it forward partnership scheme with local pantries across the city. Most people who have asylum support from the Government are expected to live of £7 a day – not much more than the cost of a day ticket on the bus- and are forced to make survival decisions on a daily basis. Some people have no support at all and are destitute. While our caseworkers work to help people to access support and to understand their rights we aim to provide a holistic service which also helps people in practical ways. We also give out SIM cards, refer people to partners for clothes, toiletries and other practical items. Our food support is central to upholding dignity for our community and it is very hard to keep up with demand as GCP works with over a 100 people a year. 54% of the people our advice and advocacy team supported in 2024 accessed some form of food support. Support during this period for people seeking asylum is essential and can be life changing.
